James Earl Jones, an imposing figure onscreen but perhaps best known for his resonant voice as the Star Wars antagonist Darth Vader and the kindly ruler Mufasa in The Lion King, passed away on Monday at the age of 93.
Jones, who shot to national fame in 1970 for his powerful, Oscar-nominated portrayal of America’s first Black heavyweight champion in The Great White Hope, died at his residence in Dutchess County, New York, as announced by the Independent Artist Group.
The esteemed actor made his cinematic entrance in Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) and left a mark in various films, such as Claudine (1974), Field of Dreams (1989), and The Sandlot (1993).
