During a recent deep sea exploration, a team of marine scientists from the Schmidt Ocean Institute captured images of 20 species that had never been documented before, and also filmed a rare type of squid for the first time.
The expedition, led by the Schmidt Ocean Institute, identified and mapped a previously undiscovered seamount on the Nazca Ridge, an underwater mountain range located approximately 900 miles off the coast of Chile.
This new seamount, which measures 1.9 miles in height, is home to a variety of rare species. The team used an underwater robot to explore one of the ridges of the mountain, where they encountered and documented 20 new deep-sea species.
